Getting a Root Canal? Top 5 Things You Should Know!
If your tooth is severely infected, there’s a good chance that you may need a root canal to save it. But don’t worry—the procedure isn’t as painful as it is rumored to be! In fact, with modern technology, root canal procedures have become relatively comfortable. With that in mind, here are five other things you should know about getting a root canal.
1. Root canals are recommended for deep infections.
Sometimes, the pulp inside of your tooth can get infected, either from an injury or possibly an untreated, severe cavity. In these instances, if you have bacteria or dead/dying tissue deep inside the tooth, a root canal may be your best bet to get infection out.
2. Without the treatment, your tooth may be at risk.
Treating a deep infection within the tooth is critical for saving the tooth as a whole. If you do not get your root canal treatment in time, there is a chance your entire tooth may need to be removed. So be certain to schedule your appointment with Hinsdale Dental as soon as possible.
3. Root canals are a four-step process.
The process for a root canal is relatively simple.
- First, your dentist will use a local anesthetic to numb your infected tooth. They may use a dental dam to isolate the tooth and keep it clean during the procedure at this time.
- Next, they will create a tiny opening in the top portion of your tooth using a small drill. And with a small file, they will clear away the damage and deceased pulp from within the tooth, as well as shape the inner chamber and root. After washing away any remaining pulp from the tooth, they will insert an antimicrobial solution to kill any remaining bacteria to prevent further infection.
- After the inside of the tooth is fully cleaned out, your dentist will fill it with gutta percha, a rubber-like material. Using a temporary filling, they will close the opening of the tooth while you wait for the permanent solution—your crown.
- Finally, after a few weeks, you will receive a permanent crown to be placed over your natural tooth.
4. Proper aftercare is crucial!
Be certain to take good care of your teeth and gums after your root canal procedure. This will allow you to prevent further infection or decay. To do so, you’ll need to schedule twice-annual cleanings with your dentist, as well as one additional appointment for an X-ray to ensure the infection is gone. Also, a proper oral healthcare routine—such as brushing twice a day and flossing regularly—will be extremely helpful in maintaining your dental health after the procedure.
5. The results can be permanent!
